JFC 1.12   [Japanese Flashcards] by Glenn Rosenthal 1999-2000
Freeware (GNU).
[You have to download separate files - up to ca. 4 MB]
Flashcard format: typically, four fields, including Japanese Kanji (characters of Chinese origin), on-yomi and kun-yomi expressions in kana ("Readings") with their English translation. Powerful: "An advanced kanji card is simply a basic kanji card followed by any number of sub-cards that use that kanji.". This feature makes JFC resemble a dictionary, thus enhancing mental associations, which adds a high educational value to this application.
Edition of flashcards: new flashcard files can be edited as simple text files, using any (external) Japanese word processor that can save a file in either EUC or UTF-8 format; it should be saved with the <.jfc> extension. JFC will automatically determine the format of the file and generate the actual flashcard file.
Training: You are prompted any of the fields in the flashcard (this is fully customizable), and have to tell if you knew them, pressing a "Show", and then a Right/Wrong button.
Selective learning: missed flashcards can be repeated, and you can assign weight (percent chance) to the cards missed 0, 1, ..., 8 times during the last 8 times they were reviewed.
Add. info: Uses Japanese bitmapped fonts (*.f00 supplied). JFC includes a font caché.
Shortcuts.
This is a very good program, but it will not be rated here, since it cannot be used for other languages.
