Key to our descriptions

This page contains information about the lingo used in our reviews (see the A-Z pages).

The applications were sorted alphabetically, but in some special cases, the blank spaces were ignored: e.g., Flashcard and Flash Card are treated just the same.

To keep the descriptions of the programs as brief as possible, only flaws or outstanding features are mentioned. Anyway, most of the times, if a major requirement from our
test criteria page is not referred explicitly in the description, you can mostly expect it as not being fulfilled by the corresponding application.

We have used the following
abbreviations and symbols:

[Prices and licenses]   Prices were round up! Prices in expired European Union currencies were converted to Euros. No guarantees are given for accuracy!
Prices and labels such as "Freeware" refer to licenses for private use only.
A price following the description "Demo" refers to the full version.
[Words in Russian]   Russian words have been transliterated using an ANSI-compliant scheme. To keep a one-to-one relation to the Cyrillic alphabet, the following non-standard conventions were adopted: zh, ì (i kratkoe), kh, x (ts), shh (shch), " (hard sign), y (jery), ' (soft sign), è (hard e), ju (soft u), ja.

?.?   ...means we could not find out the version number.
$   ...should always be understood as US$.
x   Applications listed but not tested. The counter in the subtitle of the main page ignores these programs.

Demo   A type of trial version of a program. In most cases, a demo is a crippled version, i.e. some features are disabled or were not compiled. Most demos are free to try. (See Shareware)
Freeware   A type of software that is free to use (at least for users complying with certain conditions).
French interface   Unless otherwise stated, the applications were released in English. Such a mark means the program is only available with a French interface (etc.).
French and English versions   This means the program is available separately with a French interface and with an English interface.
<Not reviewed yet>   The application is pending for review. It is also marked with a x in the index of the corresponding A-Z page.
SFr   ...means Swiss Franc (about half a dollar).
Shareware   A type of software available in form of a trial version (a.k.a. "shareware version") and a full version. In most cases, the trial version is free to try and time-limited, but not crippled in features. (See Demo)
  SP3   Service Pack 3.
VB, VB6   The application was developed with Visual Basic, which implies it will install (or you will have to install) those nasty DLL libraries on your system :-þ
You can get such libraries from
Nonags, for example (use the Search facility available there).
Windows 3.1   Most programs in this survey are 32-bit applications (for Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP). 16-bit applications are marked this way.
zip   *.zip files are compressed files and can be opened with utilities such as UltimateZip, WinZip, PowerArchiver, WinRAR and others.
