Langenscheidts Vokabeltrainer 2.0
German interface

PPPP-

Langenscheidt's... screenshot
  by Joerg-Michael Grassau
Win 95 and higher. Visual Basic.
Commercial (17 Euros). Demo available for download (approx. 7 MB). Separate releases for sale: English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Business English.

Ethical note: The author of this review consulted the developer about this product.

A program with many options but a confusing interface.

Flashcard format: Question side (arbitrary number of fields), answer side (arbitrary number of fields), and two further flashcard 'sides' which can be used for adding a sample sentences. Rich text. Links to multimedia files, clickable cues containing hints, links to external files containing hints. Variant format: cloze tests.
File format: Files divided into categories that can be combined. User's performance is logged in separate files. No Study File-files as such, but you can set "Tutoriums" (see below).
Editor: Import of plain text files, lists.
Training modes (I): "Training": Customizable variants of Leitner system ("Lernsystem"): up to 8 stages. (The drawback of using different Leitner variants is you cannot guess the learner's actual knowledge level from the number of flashcards in each stage any more.). Options: inverted questions. Statistical records can be used as filters for further training, scheduling ("Tutorium", timetables created from user preferences).
Training modes (II): (1) "Multiple Choice": if no wrong alternatives are provided on the flashcard, they can be (a) taken from other flashcards in the unit, or (b) be created by a "spelling mistake module". (2) "Zuordnen" (Matching pairs): 5 English words on the left side are to be connected with 5 German words on the right side, appearing in different order. (3) "Ansehen" (Slideshow): randomizable order, timing depends on number of characters. (4) "Diktat" (Dictation). (5) "Kreuzworträtsel" (Crossword Puzzle), created from any selection of words. (6) "Suchrätsel" (Search Puzzle). (7) "Memory" (Palmanism).
Training modes (III): Several of the modes described above (Training, Multiple Choice, Matching pairs, Dictation) can be carried out in "Prüfungsmodus" (Examination mode): assessment takes place at the end of the test only.
User-friendliness: Many keyboard shortcuts, but you definitely need a mouse for accessing many of its controls. Its interface is quirky, its layout changes with every screen. The menu bar was curtailed extremely. In order to make things easier for newbies, most functions are only accessible by way of linear 'wizards', what makes this program awkward to use for users in haste.
Extras: Options include many frills. Search. Multiple users. Printing (flashcards, lists). Speech recognition for evaluating your pronunciation (it is not too accurate, though). 40000-word Foreign language-German dictionary (flashcards transferrable to user files). Files in 57 languages on the website.

The Language Library Tester 2.0   by William Hanson 2000
Shareware $15 lantst20.zip 3.37 MB
A very simple flashcard-based drill program.

Flashcard format
: two text fields, one line only :-(, limited to 300 chrs per field.
Training
: direction can be reversed, but there is no mixed mode. Training time and test size limits possible.
Training modes: Q/A, 4-option multiple choice (wrong answers taken randomly), "Alien Attack" (beautiful pics, but very simple).
No fault tolerance.
Allows up to 30,000 words in each library. Multi-Language support.
Major spelling mistakes in German and Spanish sample files included, e.g. "el caminion" for "the truck" (right spelling is "el camión")

LanguageBox 1.0   by Justin Park
http://invincible.hypermart.net/html/softwares/index.html
Free 406 KB
Single line for each flashcard side. Sound and image can be attached to each flashcard (but not to each side). No font selection. No Leitner system. Neat, but poorly featured.

by Robert Maier / mirror / mirror
(Shareware, ~10 Euros) langcom3.zip 4706 kB
- Another program by the same author: see
Active Vocab

Packs of flashcards vs Study Files: no difference is being made.
Invertible questions
: yes.
Training modes
: (1) Slideshow. - (2) Test : you can mess up flashcards before training or take them randomly. Assessment: user is asked if s/he knew the answer. Option: "Schleiftest": missed flashcards are asked again and again.

Edition
: no. Card lists: yes. Search: yes. Sort: yes. Multiple users: no.

Lernkartei 2.0 (Archivista)
German interface
  by Archivista
Free
Formerly, this was a mere editor of flashcards to be printed. Now it provides a training mode. Text can be written in RTF format (by the way, formatting, e.g. font changes do not work properly). Very remarkably, a Pack of flashcards is structured as a
hierarchical tree.
Packs of flashcards can be printed in DIN A4 format (8 cards per sheet).

Lernkartei 2.0 (Batzelt)
German interface
  by Armin Batzelt
http://www.webset.de/software/arminbatzelt/lksetup.zip

- Single answer and multiple choice available.
+ Leitner
... (max. number of cards per Pack of flashcards unknown)
+ Self-grading (but awkward !)
- No flashing
+ Easiest to use editor, can handle any font.

Lernkartei 1.1 (Bigler)
German interface
by Thomas Bigler, Sägetstr. 39, CH-3303 Jegenstorf, Thomas_BiglerDELETETHIS@csi.com
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Thomas_Bigler/
Shareware (~12 Euros for the complete set Biglers Lernprogramme 1.6)
Bundled into a set of language learning programs,
Biglers Lernprogramme 1.6 (biglern.exe 1287 kB), also including several variants of Lernkartei (English irregular verbs / Verbes Français / Deutsche Stammformen, Grundwortschatz Englisch / Französisch / Spanisch), and the following apps: Blanks ?.? (try to remember a text ), Brüche und Zahlen 1.7 (complete set of basic math. apps: operations on fractions, converts fraction into decimal number and back, prime / power / cubic / factorial number generator, decomp. of integer into prime factors, etc.), Geograf 1.2 (multiple choice countries/capitals test), Kopfrechnen 1.2 (timed mental calculation test with cribs), Kalender 1.2 (calendar generator in 19 languages from 1583-3000), MasMin 1.1 / MasterMind mit Zahlen (guess set of cyphers), Memory 1.0 (choose between 4 sets of pics), Wörterraten 1.2 (a four-languages hangman), Beatles 1.1 (Beatles' song lyrics, browsable by song and by album), Tutu's Editor 1.1 (simple kindergarten text editor), and a set of "utils" (screensavers, file date converter, etc.).

Lernkartei 1.1 One-line text only. Question direction can be reversed. Selective learning: no Leitner system, but can prioritize less known flashcards automatically. Slide show (timed display of answer). Can edit cards and display list of flashcards in file. Assessment/stats: tells performance during the last training session.

Installation: does not allow choosing destination directory (by default into c:\program files\biglern etc.) :-\
All apps very stable (prime number generation in Brüche und Zahlen could be aborted at any time, etc.). Bugs: Deutsche Stammformen always grades your answers as wrong :-D.

In summary, the full set includes interesting, original applications, although Lernkartei has limited capabilities.

Lernsystem Pro
German interface
  by Lutz Hülsdunk
Temporarily freeware, formerly Shareware (approx. 25 Euros).
setup.exe 2438 kB
Slow loading.
Flashcard format: question/answer, plus a customizable prompting command ("S.L.A.N.G.®"). You can insert such a prompt using certain autotext abbreviations (yielding "Tell me the meaning of ...", "... kinds", "... definition", etc.), so as to make the program useful for subjects other than language learning.
Data types: Multiple line text, graphic and sound file attachments. A proprietary rich text format allows bold, italics, underscore, different fonts, text color, etc.!
Flashcard files ("Fächer") list is displayed on startup window. Each file contains several parts, "Themen", which contain the flashcards.
Training modes: 10 level Leitner system. Learner can only mark cards as known. No input / right answer matching algorithm. (1) Slideshow of all stacks ("Blättern"), (2) "Manuell" learning (select a stack), (3) "Auto-Lernen", where program chooses cards from different stacks, with regard to their weight. (4) "Knackpunkte", where you train only in those cards you marked manually for this purpose.
User-friendliness: very awkward interface. Mouse is a must.
More: Edit. List. Search/replace. Print single cards (8 on a DIN A4 sheet).
Extras: Import/Export. (German) customizable spellchecking. Plugins. Backups (caché, customizable size). You can add a note to each flashcard.
Proprietary help format (clickable index of sections).
Includes samples: German-Spanish vocabulary and German law terms

Windows 95/98 This program was developed from Vokabulator.
Feature-limited demo (Basic: ~15 Euros, XL: ~25 Euros, XXL: ~35 Euros, approx. $14 / $23 / $32)
Language-specific versions for German learners of English, French, Spanish, Italian and Latin, on three levels: Basic, XL, and XXL. Modular build: you can combine all versions into the same interface.

Yet another good vocabulary learning program.

Flashcard format: two sides. You can separate items within a side by two customizable delimiters, one for "synonyms" and one for "alternates". One-line text only :-(, you can only set a font for each flashcard side in a lesson.
Flashcard file format: Open files by a two-level Explorer-like dialog.
Bundled glossaries: Basic/XL/XXL includes about 20000 / 50000 / 90000 words with sound files. Basic includes Basic/Medium/Advanced glossaries; XL the same and adds 50 thematic glossaries; XXL also 100 thematic glossaries. The glossaries are of good quality.
Edit mode extras: glossary lookup: you can use the glossaries to complete your personal Packs of flashcards.
Packs of flashcards vs Study Files: yes, but you can use a single Study File.
Training modes: Q&A (typed), Q&A (speech input) by way of a microphone (spectrograms for wave file and user input are displayed), multiple choice test, and dictation (single words). XL and XLL versions also include a customizable conjugation trainer, and the XXL version includes a collection of grammar lessons with cloze tests and a cloze test editor.
Assessment: uses a customizable Leitner system with a fixed numer of stages (6).
Fault tolerance: case sensitive on/off, configurable equivalent expressions (don't = do not, etc.), ignore accented letters, ignore text in brackets, ignore blank spaces, accept any of a list of right answers.
Training mode extras: timing, glossary lookup.
Extras: Poor character map. Stats. Import function from: plain text, database, Vokabulator.
Bugs: memory access error occurred in the Open dialog when we tested it in Win2000.
