Open Book 1.32
Combined English / Russian interface

GGG--
  by Aleksei Vinidiktov
Shareware (30-day trial), openbook132.zip, 770 kB

A tidy program with some limitations.

Flashcard format
: question/answer/comment. One line text only :-(  One font can be set for each of the three fields in a file.
Training modes: (1) timed question/answer with no typing in of answer (user inputs if (s)he knows the answer or not); (2) multiple choice (answer options generated autom.); (3) Typing in the answer (various hints can be displayed).
Training options: program can pop-up every now and then; comment field can be hidden; reset "rating" for a flashcard, mark it as known; reset statistics. (Stats are basic logs, no graphs available).
Assessment: implements a variation of Leitner's 5-stage system, of which the first and last are archives and cannot be trained upon. Peculiarities: (a) the program fills a compartment as it gets empty by training; (b) the number of cards that have to be present in each compartment can be set from an options dialog; (c) the "rating" for a card being promoted or demoted to another compartment can be set.
Editor: in separate window.
Editor extras: simple search facility, sorting, shuffling, swapping questions and answers; import [no export :-( ] facility.
Usability: shortcuts, very intuitive interface, a different keyboard layout can be assigned to each flashcard field.

Help file (<chm> format) has to be downloaded separately.

SSS--
  by C. and J.M. Bardin
Freeware lookhere.zip 30.921 MB
A program for learning English (German learning version is called "

Plays back sentences made up by single word recordings.
Training modes: (1) "Observe": (click on "Action") 12 thematic glossaries where the student has to match the pronunciation (s)he hears with a picture, (2) "Comprends": listen to sentences related to pictures (map with capitals, etc.) and answer if they are true, (3) "Repère": listen to sentences and answer if they match the picture on the screen, (4) "Distingue": insert the blank spaces omitted in a sentence, (5) "Écris": listen to sentences and type them in, (6) "Ordonne": listen to sentences that are listed scrambled -- sort the sentences as you hear them , (7) "Visite": webpage info about Britain -- many beautiful photographs, (8) "Quizz": multiple choice (3 options) , (9) "Studio": student records their pronunciation of the words of the dictionary and compares spectrogram with a model.
Dictionary mode: search facility.
Edit modes: dictionary and "Questionnaire" quizzes (3 answer options) can be edited and write-protected later.
Extras: Multiple users (sorted in class groups). Assessment: scores, but no selective learning.
Bugs: runtime errors. User-friendliness: mouse is a must :-(
Conclusion: This is a nice application, destined for primary schools. It teaches basic English vocabulary and listening skills, but its scope is somewhat limited with regard to our rating criteria.
