|WinStudy 97 4.0||by ESDevelopment
Written in VisualBasic.
Flashing, scoring, but no Leitner levels. Suspicious: does not appear when pressing ALT+TAB, and steals icons from other apps in Task Manager (WinNT4, SP3)!
|WinTrainer 1.0||by ArtDig (Marco Wrobel)
Shareware (~5 Euros)
awt.zip 1942 kB/ 1898 kB
Simple trainer. One line text only. Leitner system (up to 9 boxes/Study Files). Assessment: program checks answer. <dbf> files. Stats shown in percentage on main window. Print list.
Nonstandard interface (no menu bar). Uncomfortable input (need to press "Next" after answer input and checked !). Too expensive for its performance.

- From the same author: PC-Englisch / Französisch / Italienisch / Latein / Spanisch (~25 Euros each) for German native speakers.
16-bit Windows and higher. 1.8 MB
Flashcards can contain one-line Q&A :-(, sample sentences and several multiple-use fields (prefix, postfix, and two more, e.g. for conjugation training). Flashcards sorted in collections and units.
Fault-tolerant check. Leitner-like system (-100%-100% score). Stats. Printout of flashcard lists.
|WinVOK II 2.05a
One-line text only. :-( Only ANSI fonts, i.e. not even Polish or Russian supported. No Leitner system, but misses are asked more often. You can add right answers to a flashcard during a training session.
|Wisco Word Power 1.2||by Wisco Computing
- From the same series, $39.95, without crossword and kriss-kross puzzles: Vocabulary Power, vocabp.zip 507 kB
Shareware $59.95 + shipping
wiword.zip 543 kB 16-bit and higher.
(An upgrade from two DOS programs called Crossword Power and Vocabulary Power. )
No flashcard training tool, actually. You can "open" a word list by selecting words one by one :-( from it. Then, this program will generate a printable page including flashcards, a crossword, a (pairs) matching quiz, a 4-options multiple choice test, and other similar teacher handouts (multiple choice tests, cloze tests, bingo cards, juggle letters). They can be saved as plain text files or bmp files. You can merge word lists.
Configurable throughout. No uninstall.
|by S. Becker & A. Jorde
16-bit and higher.
Seven-line text (14 lines in total) :-( Fonts can be changed in each such line. 5-stages Leitner system. You can't type in the answer to a question, but are asked if you knew it. Time limit is available in training mode. Prints in paper card format.
Multiple users. For each Pack of flashcards and each user a "learning status" file is created, so the original Packs of flashcards are kept intact. Packs of flashcards can be "exported" to be imported into Wissenstrainer again - not other programs.
When tries to access floppy drive and there's no disk in, it produced runtime errors under NT.
|WordLearn '99||by R. Truninger
|WordQuiz 4.2.2||by P. Hedlund, http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/9010
Flashcards invertible in training mode. Training modes: Q&A, slideshow, cloze, multiple choice (answers taken randomly), text only, no Leitner system.
English and Russian interface
|by Vsevolod Vasilyev, http://www.soft-one.com
Shareware $9 (English version to come)
setup.exe 877 kB
Flashcard format: three one-line text fields [up to 50 chrs :-( each], intended for word / counterpart / phonetical transcription; but fonts are customizable.
Training: Timing and question reversion possible. Assessment: repetition lies in proportion with misses. Switches keyboard layout automatically with flashcard side user is going to input. More: it is resident and can popup from time to time to ask you a word (like Swot).
A neat application that keeps its promises. Some more key shortcuts would be nice, anyway.
|by Dynotech 1996
Tetris-like spelling game, no flashcard trainer.
It does not appear in the CTRL+TAB sequence. Runtime errors under NT.
|The Words 97 1.11||by Aki Tuuliainen

Simply sets up lists of words to translate. No scoring.
|WordsFlash 1.08||by Shamil Nizamov
Shareware $15 wfe.zip 883 kB
Separate Japanese and English releases.
(Japanese: wfj.zip, works with MS Japanese support for Western Windows versions)
This program pops up every now and then (customizable timer), displaying a word or expression. Modes: (1) display word & translation into another language, or (2) press CTRL+T or glide the mouse cursor over its window, and the translation will appear.
You can mark words as known in order to skip them forever.
Several sample files (plain text) included.
Interesting: can tell phonetic transcription (in square brackets) and display it properly (with font included).
Another feature is a(n English) grammar review giving you an intensive review in grammar material, written style, problem vocabulary and preposition. Such themes are to be downloaded from their site!
Faults: no "pause" command in the context menu of its icon in the system tray. Words in other scripts (Russian) cannot be displayed properly in Western Win, since fonts cannot be customized.
|WordTester 2.1||by Tom Heine Nätt, http://home.sol.no/~natt/ncs, 1998
