Do you need to learn vocabulary of a foreign language?
| |
|
For this and similar purposes, drill & practice and, more specifically,
memorization tasks, can be a useful complement to higher level activities such as contextual learning.
CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) has introduced a new era in which drill & practice can be accomplished
much more effectively and conveniently than ever.
Drill & practive software tests the user on Question & Answer pairs (virtual "flash cards").
The advantage of using flashcards is that since information is fragmented, you can review your learning material on a selective
basis, and hence save a great deal of time.
This website hosts reviews of 200+
computer programs whose purpose is to help you memorize anything fast by way
of question & answer quizzes.

Why should I read this report?
| |
|
This website features reviews of a number of flashcard-based drill programs
from different authors. Unlike most software review sites, we are not dazzled by multimedia bells and whistles.
Our tests follow no-nonsense pedagogical principles.
In particular, to make learning really effective, a flashcard-based drill program must allow you to give priority to difficult questions rather
than to waste your time with those known long since. This is possible only if the program sorts the flashcards
into groups of "known" and "failed" questions:

How do I find a program that fits my needs?
| |
|
You need not read the full report, of course. If you are in a hurry,
try some of the programs recommended in the Winners
Gallery.
If you are looking for software with a specific feature, refer to the corresponding section on the Rating Criteria page
instead. That page contains links to selected reviews contained in the A-Z pages. |
How do I locate a program I know?

If you want to browse this survey by alphabetical order, use the table
on the left of this page. In case you don't find what you want there, check out the "Not reviewed yet"
and "Other operating systems" sections. |
